Widal Test (Typhoid IgM)
Widal test detects antibodies against Salmonella typhi (typhoid fever). However, it has significant limitations — a single positive test is NOT diagnostic.
Unit: Titer
Positive Widal (titer 1:160 or above for O antigen): SUGGESTIVE of typhoid but NOT confirmatory. Many false positives in India due to endemic exposure and previous vaccination. Typhidot or blood culture are more reliable.
Negative Widal in first week doesn't rule out typhoid — antibodies take 7-10 days to develop. Repeat after 1 week if typhoid suspected.
