Peripheral Smear for Malaria Parasite
Gold standard for malaria diagnosis. Blood smear examined under microscope to identify Plasmodium species. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are also available.
Unit: Detected/Not Detected
If malaria parasite DETECTED: immediate treatment needed. P. falciparum is the dangerous species — can cause cerebral malaria, organ failure. P. vivax is less dangerous but can relapse. Treatment depends on species.
Not detected is reassuring but a single negative smear doesn't fully exclude malaria. If fever persists, repeat test every 12-24 hours for 3 days.
