Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. Elevated levels typically indicate pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation).

High amylase (3x or more above normal): acute pancreatitis is most likely. Alcohol and gallstones are the two most common causes. Other causes: salivary gland disease, bowel obstruction, ectopic pregnancy.
Low amylase may indicate chronic pancreatitis (burnt-out pancreas producing less enzyme), cystic fibrosis, or advanced pancreatic disease.
