Augmentin 625 Dosage, Uses & Side Effects: Complete Indian Guide

AAugmentin 625 is a combination antibiotic: Amoxicillin 500mg + Clavulanic Acid 125mg. Amoxicillin kills bacteria; clavulanic acid blocks the enzyme (beta-lactamase) that bacteria produce to destroy amoxicillin. Together they handle 'resistant' bacteria that plain amoxicillin can't. Brands in India: Augmentin 625 Duo (GlaxoSmithKline, ₹230/strip of 6 tablets), Moxikind-CV 625 (Mankind, ₹145), Clavam 625 (Alkem, ₹165), Clavix 625, Amoxyclav 625. Generic is fine — all have same molecules in same amounts.

First-line for: bacterial sinusitis (mucus turning yellow/green >10 days), middle ear infection (otitis media) in kids, tonsillitis/pharyngitis (strep throat confirmed by culture or rapid test), bronchitis when bacterial cause suspected, pneumonia (mild-moderate), UTI (urine culture dictates choice), dental abscess/tooth infection, skin/wound infections, dog bite/human bite prophylaxis. NOT for: cold/flu/COVID (all viral), simple sore throat from dry weather, viral gastroenteritis, asthma flare without infection, most fevers before diagnosis.

Standard adult dose: 625mg every 8 hours (3 times a day) × 5-7 days for most infections. For mild infections: 625mg every 12 hours (twice a day). Maximum: 1g every 12 hours for severe. Duration: Most infections 5-7 days. Sinusitis / severe pneumonia: 10-14 days. UTI: 5-7 days. Dental abscess: 5 days. Take with food to reduce stomach upset — ideal timing: start of meal.
